Woke up feeling terrible, and I didn't feel much better after the 90 min drive to the race HQ.
I had quite high expectations the day before for a good result, having spent the previous 2 weeks training hard in Majorca.
Starting the race feeling really tired and slightly ill, I didn't want to go straight into red. I sat near the front but held myself back from attacking. I had been told big Magnus B was up for the win today and true to the rumours within the first 2-3k he was off down the road. Eventually a group of 10 worked their way up to him and with the bunch messing about they were gone!
After feeling comfortable up the climbs I managed to get away with one of the 100% me guys and we managed to pull away. We were joined by a couple of others riders, and off we went in our small group of 6.
We were catching the odd rider who had been dropped from the lead groups but were still out of contention for a result. I was feeling strong and pulled hard in the break. Some of the guys were messing about missing turns but I wasn't really interested in fighting for a place outside the top 20.
We eventually caught a small group which us in the top 15 on the road. With attacks going on the last 1/2 lap I got myself into a group of 4 to contest the finish. My - in the saddle trying not to cramp - sprint was pretty useless and I was passed by 2 out of 3 of the guys I was with.
Overall, the result wasn't great, but I am definitely pleased with how I was feeling. Legs are good!
Going to take a couple of days now to 'freshen up' after a hard March!
So far today I've done some core work, and I'm going to jump on the rollers in a minute.
